Monastery of Pitões das Júnias

Also known as the Monastery of Santa Maria de Júnias, is a monument with a regional and historical significance of fantastic scientific value and heritage.

It is located in a magnificent valley between Mourela Plateau and Sierra of Geres, it is presumed that this monastery was founded in the late ninth century by thirteen monks.

The intention was to host Benedictine monks, and during the twelfth century was given to the Cistercian Order. After the extinction of the religious orders in Portugal in 1834, the monastery is abandoned and a few years later was destroyed by a fire that left only the church standing.

The church, with a single nave and wooden cover, still preserves an interesting Romanesque portal and a Renaissance altarpiece in the presbytery. Recently, the organization of the National Park Peneda-Geres promoted an archaeological digging in the cloister and the convent kitchen.

Annually, on August 15 is celebrated a pilgrimage where people of Pitões das Júnias and the surrounding villages come to celebrate.

Abrigos de Pitões

These "shelters" or mountain lodges where you can enjoy sweeping views between narrow valleys and fearful peaks of the National Park Peneda-Geres, remain in do Coto Street, in the village of Pitões das Júnias, a typical mountain village in the intermediate zone of Geres and Barroso to 1164m altitude.

The shelters have basic amenities of modern life, but are specially prepared for those who enjoy the simple life of the mountain and the nature.
